이 프로젝트의 주목적은 은행 내부에 협력과 커뮤니티 분위기를 향상시키는 열린 사무실 공간을 만드는 것이었다. 프로젝트를 담당한 HASSELL팀이 맞닥뜨린 가장 큰 문제는 ‘은행 업무 공간을 특징짓는 가장 전통적인 요소인 저장고를 허물고 어떻게 혁신적인 디자인을 창출하는가’ 였다.

그 디자인적 영감은 역사를 거슬러 1765년의 네덜란드 은행과 최첨단 홍콩 금융산업의 현대성 사이에서 나왔다. 자연의 냉혹함을 마주하고 있는 저지대 네덜란드와 높은 콘크리트로 들어찬 홍콩은 모두 창조적인 컨셉을 가져다 준다.

자연 소재의 사용은 네덜란드인의 땅과 물을 보존해온 역사와 자연에 대한 사랑으로부터 끌어냈다. 서로 연결돼 있는 계단은 암스테르담에 있는 운하용 보트를 참조했으며, 한편 조각된 파티션이 미팅룸을 가로질러 놓였고, 사무실 전면은 홍콩의 스카이라인과 항구의 드라마틱한 경관을 직접 볼 수 있는 흥미로운 공간으로 창조됐다.

격리실, 면회실, 넓게 할애된 휴식 공간 그리고 수조가 특징적인 교류 공간은 대화와 협동심을 향상시킬 수 있도록 창조됐다. 개인은행 부서의 반폐 단말기 요구를 수용하기 위해 초기 계획 지침이 수정돼야만 했는데, 이것은 하부 복도로 부터 필수적인 공간을 끌어들임으로써 해결했다.

HASSELL은 네덜란드 은행 소장품에서 홍콩사무실을 위한 역동적인 동시대적 예술작품을 고르기 위해 예술컨설턴트와 함께 작업했다. 네덜란드와 홍콩의 랜드마크들을 보여주고 있는 그래픽 월, 세계적인 네덜란드 가구, 기구들 및 마감법들 또한 눈에 띄는 특징들이다.
빠르게 자라는 탄화 대나무, 좀 더 좋은 공기를 공급하기 위한 플랜터 박스, 스마트 조명 기구들, 친환경 직물들과 가구는 LEED-CI Gold 친환경 인증을 획득한 프로젝트로 공인받게 된 또 다른 요소들이다.

The client’s main objectives were to create an open-plan office space that promoted collaboration and a sense of community within the bank. The biggest challenge the HASSELL team faced was how to incorporate innovative design features to break down the traditional silos that characterised most banking workplaces.
Inspiration for the design came from the contrast between the history of the Dutch bank, which dates back to 1765, and the high-tech modernity of the Hong Kong finance industry. The stark opposites of natural, low-lying Netherlands and concrete, vertical Hong Kong also drove the creative concept.
The use of natural materials in the fitout drew heavily from the Dutch love of nature and history of land and water conservation. The interconnecting staircase referenced the details of canal boats in Amsterdam, while curved partitions across meeting rooms and office fronts created intriguing spaces while directing the viewer’s gaze to dramatic views of Hong Kong’s skyline and harbour.
Quiet rooms, meeting spaces, a large shared breakout area, and a trading area which featured a fish tank were created – promoting interaction and collaboration. The original open-plan brief had to be revised to accommodate the private banking department’s need for semi-enclosed workstations. This was achieved by co-opting the necessary space from an under-utilised corridor.
HASSELL worked with an art consultant to select vibrant and contemporary artwork from the bank’s collection in the Netherlands for the Hong Kong office. Graphic walls exploring Dutch and Hong Kong landmarks, world-class Dutch furniture, fittings and finishes also featured prominently.
Fast-growing carbonised bamboo, planter boxes for better air quality, smart lighting controls, eco-friendly fabrics and furniture were among other features that ensure the project achieved a LEED-CI Gold sustainability rating.
