비록 한순간 스치는 것이지만 바람은 정말 강력한 힘을 가졌다. 숲이나 너른 들판에 있는 식물들의 유연한 움직임이 보여주는 자연의 힘, 그 산들거리는 바람의 소리와 감촉에는 보편적으로 움직이는 무언가가 있다.

그러면서도 어디서나 흔한 바람의 특성은 지역적 특수성을 해하지 않는다. 캐나다 퀘벡의 농부와 도시 주민들은 산들바람에 흔들리는 아마과(科) 꽃들이 이루는 푸른 파도의 아름다움을 입증하고 있다.

포브스 립시츠(Forbes Lipschitz)는 국제 정원 페스티벌에서 ‘퀘벡의 바람’에 영감을 얻은 시설물을 만들기 위해 ‘ATLAS lab’과 파트너가 되었다. 정원 초기에는 리넨(아마 섬유) 깃발이 그리드 형태로 바람의 변화 방향을 보여주며 들판을 점령한다. 풀밭 좌석에서 보았을 때, 이 바람벽은 들판을 방향성 패턴으로 우아하게 만들어 주는데 필요한 물리적 힘을 발생시킨다.

방문자들이 들판 주위를 순회하면, 들판에 있는 방문자와 아마 식물의 움직임 사이에 직접적인 관계를 미쳐 바람의 흐름은 잠깐 동안 방해를 받게 된다. 여기서 바람은 순간 풍경화 속 새겨진 가장 중요한 디자인 주체로서 역할을 한다.

Though ever fleeting, the wind is a truly powerful force in the landscape. There is something universally moving about the sound and feel of wind rustling in a forest or an open field, the forces of nature rendered visible by the fluid movement of plants. Yet the ubiquitous nature of wind does not forsake its regional specificity. In Quebec, farmers and rural dwellers can attest to the beauty of blue waves of flax flowers trembling in the breeze.
Forbes Lipschitz partnered with ATLAS lab to create an installation inspired by the winds of Quebec at the Jardins de Metis International Garden Festival. In the initial stages of the garden, a grid of flax linen flags occupies the field, inscribing the changing movement of wind. The Wind Walls generate the force necessary to gracefully form the grass field into directional patterns, observed from the seating area. As visitors circulate along the perimeter of the field, the wind stream becomes momentarily interrupted by their presence, encouraging a direct relationship between the movement of both the visitors and the flax in the field. Here wind operates as a primary agent of design, ephemerally etching its pattern onto the landscape canvas.
